Apps !

Since Apple created the IPhone, a world has been created on June 28, 2008: the App Store! The App Store is a platform which provides digital applications. In other words, from an IPhone you can browse and download any App. They can be free or sometimes you have to pay for it. At the very beginning, only 500 apps existed. On January 2009, already 500 millions apps had been downloaded.

Here is a graph showing the number of Apps downloaded since the beginning:

An app can be compared to a service. An app is a service located on your IPhone that provides you whatever you need. For example, if you are looking for which bus you need to take to go somewhere, you just need to download tfl uk (London’s train and bus services) on your IPhone and you can search for all the information you need regarding buses and trains.

Who creates Apps ?

Anyone who wants to! As soon as you think that you have a good idea for an app, something that could help people, make them laugh, teach them something or solve a problem, it can be a good idea!

join the Apple iPhone Developer Program ($99)
 get iPhone or iPod Touch
get an Intel-based Mac computer with Mac OS X 10.5.5
 prepare a Non-Disclosure Agreement
download and install the latest version of the iPhone SDK
 a spiral bound notebook

It is also advised to do a market research before you start because it can be an idea that someone has already had… or it can be something that nobody needs except you… TAKE YOUR TIME to analyse the situation!

Then there are a lot of steps to follow, design, programs etc… And finally submit your app to Apple Store. Try to promote your apps after that…

The average price of an app is 1.49 Dollars. According to Munster, Apple earns only 13% of the amount.

IPOD ... 10 Years !

The first IPod was presented 10 years ago, by Steve Jobs (who was wearing exactly the same outfit than the following 10 years until his death… jean, baskets, black turtleneck): it was on Monday, 23rd October 2001.

Here is a video of the presentation.

At the beginning, the IPod had been criticized: people were expecting a new concept and not something that similar to a MP3. But Steve Jobs kept confident thanks to the look of the IPod: indeed, the IPod has a click wheel which was something new (and is still on the IPod today). It is only in 2004 that the IPod became successful.
Apple have sold 320 millions IPOD in 10 years… while Samsung sold only 300,000 walkman in 30 years, said Tim Cook the 4th October, when he was presenting the new versions of IPod Nano and IPod Touch.
But even with those good results, it is impossible not to wonder when Apple is going to end the manufacture of IPods…

Apple, with the IPod, sold 70% of the MP3 in 2011. The IPod revenues, in 2011, were 7,44 billions dollars, which represents only 6,8% of all Apple’s revenues.

Nowadays, a large range of IPods exists: IPod Shuffle, IPod Touch, IPod Nano, IPod Classic:

Bonuses

Last week, Apple awarded its 6 senior executives 60 million dollars each in stock if they are staying in the firm through March 2016.

Last Friday, Apple declared that it granted 150,000 restricted stock units to all the senior executives. At the end of the day Friday, those stock units were worth over 60 million dollar each.

As Apple shares worth 406.23 dollars today at the close of trading, which represents an increase of 6.50 (1.63%), the options of each senior executives were equivalent to:

406.23 x 150,000 = 60,934,500 Dollars.

If we assume that the 6 senior executives remain with the company, half of the shares will be theirs in June 2013, and the other half in March 2016.

Regarding the new CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, he was awarded by the Apple board of directors, in August, of one million shares that vest in 2015 and 2021, that is to say in 4 and 10 years. Today, at the close of trading, Tim Cook’s shares are worth:

 406.23 x 1,000,000 = 406,230,000 Dollars.

Steve Job's look

http://www.applegazette.com/mac/i-am-steves-black-turtleneck/

As everyone has noticed, Steve Job used to wear everyday the same clothes: a black turtleneck, a pair of Levi’s 501 jeans and a pair of New Balance. Since he died, everybody wants to have the same look!

According to his biographer, Walter Isaacson, here is the story of the black turtleneck:

« On a trip to Japan in the early 1980s, Jobs asked Sony's chairman Akio Morita why everyone in the company's factories wore uniforms. He told Jobs that after the war, no one had any clothes, and companies like Sony had to give their workers something to wear each day. Over the years, the uniforms developed their own signatures styles, especially at companies such as Sony, and it became a way of bonding workers to the company. "I decided that I wanted that type of bonding for Apple," Jobs recalled…
In the process, however, he became friends with Miyake and would visit him regularly. He also came to like the idea of having a uniform for himself, both because of its daily convenience (the rationale he claimed) and its ability to convey a signature style. "So I asked Issey to make me some of his black turtlenecks that I liked, and he made me like a hundred of them." Jobs noticed my surprise when he told this story, so he showed them stacked up in the closet. "That's what I wear," he said. "I have enough to last for the rest of my life."

St Croix, a brand that sells men’s luxury sportswear, claimed credit for producing Steve Job’s black mock turtleneck. The company says that Jobs was a « fan of St. Croix ». As a tribute to Steve Jobs, the firm promised to donate 20 dollars to the « ongoing fight against cancer » for every 175 dollars Jobs-style  turtleneck ordered by October 16.

Samsung VS Apple

Who is going to win the war? Samsung or Apple?

The sales of Samsung’s Smartphones increased by 44 % over one year to reach 117 million units at the end of 2011. Samsung (using the Android System developed by Google) sold 27,8 millions, far more than Apple who sold 17,1 millions.
The sales of Apple might have been affected by the expectation of the new I Phone…
Android reached 42 % of market share in US and 22 % in Europe against respectively 17 and 20 % for the system Apple (iOS)
While Samsung announced a profit of 2,2 billion Euros (-23%) Apple presented a historic profits 25,22 billion dollars, approximately 18 billion Euros (+85%). In other word, Apple earns 9 times more money that Samsung this year.

This war started a long time ago. It is a war about the patent that they are using or not.
Since the beginning, each of the brands are trying to forbid the other to sell its products because of the patent that they are using?

http://webtablab.com/apple/tablet-war-apple-ipad2-vs-motorola-xoom-vs-samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1/

Everything began in April when Apple considered that the Galaxy S Smartphone and the tablet Galaxy Tab de Samsung were using the same design and some features of the I Phone and I Pad. Since that, Apple tried to stop the sales of the Samsung products in a lot of countries.

An inverse trend is now observable..

Now, it is Samsung who accuses its competitor of violating some of its patents. To prove this statement Samsung wants to have access to the source of the code of the I Phone 4. This action is being made in Australia.

Let’s see who is now going to win ….!

Happy Halloween!

I hope you had a good Halloween party!

Look at this picture! I thought I was funny!

I just bought Steve Jobs’ biography… As soon as I will read it I will quote the best parts!

Now, let’s talk about the new I Phone

According to some information that I found on a lot of forums and articles on the web, it seems that the new I Phone 4S presents some problems with its battery. People are saying that when they are using it, they can loose 10% of battery in only 15 minutes! Others are saying that they are loosing about 10% while they are sleeping! This can be a huge problem for waking up in the morning (clock)! At first, Apple said that the battery could last 8 hours… Engineers seems to be working on it..

I will post soon an article about Samsung - Apple War !
